For my critical summary assignment, I chose to do race and curriculum. I find this topic to be intriguing because as a person from a non-Western country being educated by traditional pedagogy has an odd approach in education. Western curriculum and traditional curriculum have their differences that determines the type of learning experience that each student receives. In a classroom setting we are mostly influenced by Western curriculum because it has been embedded over the last years. Race and curriculum has been a heavy topic due to the impact of racial differences that contribute to the community.

In an article called The politics of curriculum, race, and class where Sizemore made a statement that “The accusation [of the traditionalist] is that the curriculum is now dominated by feminist courses, black literature, and marginal stuff that has nothing to do with Western thought.” Sizemore explains that the traditionalist does not agree with the role of women and people of colour to be part of the curriculum in Western thought. This statement continues to show that the contributions and opinion from the marginalized group were socially excluded from the educational system.

As I explore more about this concept, I plan to know the curriculum from other countries and compare the differences in the educational pedagogy that could be used in our school system today. The ideas and methods from other traditional curriculum could be something that could benefit the students from learning and an advantage for the teachers to execute lessons.
