Week 2: Curriculum Theory & Practice

The first model of Smith’s curriculum theory and practice explores the idea of curriculum as transmitted. In this concept, Smith explains that curriculum is the “body of knowledge” that the students and teachers uses throughout the school year to identify the outline of the subject. The benefit of using a syllabus in education is to prepare the students ahead of what is expected of them to contribute and know about the course. The drawback for this curriculum is that the students are limited to their resources for education because of the material used that restricts the content of the subject.

Secondly, Smith views the curriculum as a product in which, he emphasizes the use of objectives in teaching. In this method, curriculum is assessed by the content of ideas rather by implementing proper techniques that exceeds the criteria. One example that Smith mentioned about curriculum is that “it involved detailed attention to what people needed to know in order to work.” The benefit for this method is that it helps the student to understand and pay more attention to the material, however, it restricts the students to expand their reasoning and cognitive development.

The third method of Smith’s curriculum theory and practice is that he views curriculum as a process. This method is heavily dependent on the interaction between students, teachers, and knowledge. The benefit of this approach is that it is leaning in towards active learning where the students are encouraged to participate into conversations.

The final method to Smith’s curriculum theory and practice is that he views curriculum as praxis in which, he emphasizes the importance of communication between the student and teacher in terms of conflict. This approach focuses on the idea of action and reflection where the students are anticipated to engage into a variety of learning dynamics that can benefit each individual.

In my experience, the curriculum that was more prominent in my class is the curriculum as transmitted due to high demands of knowing ahead what is being taught. This method helped me to be more organize throughout the school year because I know what to do and expected of me.
